Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass

All of our fresh organic wheatgrass is grown outside during the summer months but in cold weather we bring it in and it grows in our naturally sky-lit growing room. It is planted and watered by hand so that every tray receives the individual attention that it deserves. Our wheatgrass is grown using organic spelt grain, an ancient variety of wheat. Spelt is a heritage grain and we have found it produces a stronger, healthier and juicier grass. Organic spelt grain is more expensive than standard organic wheat grain but we feel it’s worth it! Many of our customers are health practitioners who recommend our wheatgrass to their clients and new customers report that they find the taste much more palatable than the wheatgrass juice they have tried in the past.

How was it discovered?

Green juices were dubbed 'concentrated sunlight' by Dr Bircher-Benner (1867-1939) (above), a Swiss doctor and pioneer of dietary health. He was convinced that health care should be much more than just medical treatments.

In 1897, he founded a sanatorium in Zürich where he practised therapies which included a daily walk, bathing and sunbathing. He even set up exercise equipment, a kind of a forerunner of the fitness centres of today.

He famously invented muesli, and strongly advocated the consumption of more fruit and vegetables, which were traditionally regarded as foods for the poor. Contrary to orthodox medical doctrines of his time, Dr. Bircher continued to believe in what he called "the food of sunlight", meals based on natural raw ingredients. Green juices were in at the start of the modern health movement!

Dr Ann Wigmore (above) began her pioneering healing work with fresh wheatgrass over 30 years ago at the Hippocrates Institute in Florida. Her colleagues continue the work and many courageous testimonials and success stories emanate from there, always linked to greater self-knowledge, convincing us that better health is about diet, often about wheatgrass and juices, but always a story of personal evolution.
