How to Grow Wheatgrass – You can use Spelt Grain or Wheat Grain for growing wheatgrass
Wheatgrass is one of nature's superfoods. Growing your own is a satisfying and economical way to get fresh wheatgrass, ready for home juicing. We recommend you use organic compost or soil to ensure you have the best nutritious wheatgrass juice. Spelt is an ancient type of wheat that hasn’t been developed for its gluten or starch properties, and we believe it grows the best wheatgrass.
Soak about 500g of spelt grain/400g of wheat grain in warm water (40ºC initially) for a minimum 8 hours, or leave overnight.
Drain off the water and rinse the seeds through with fresh water
Cover the base of the tray about 2cm high.
Spread the seeds evenly on top of the compost.
Water evenly, using a can with a rose.
Keep at room temperature for 3 days, watering if necessary once a day, keeping the compost moist. It is important to keep the seeds moist during germination, but do not over water.
On approximately the fourth day, once the seeds have germinated, ensure the wheatgrass tray is placed in a light place, the brighter the better and water daily.
You can slow or speed the growth of your wheatgrass by manipulating the temperature. Fresh air and sunshine is what it likes best, but in cold weather you will need to keep your wheatgrass indoors on or near a windowsill.
After approximately 10-14 days, the wheatgrass will be 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) high, and will be at its optimum nutritional value, having transformed maximum light energy into chlorophyll, making it deep green. It is now ready to juice.
Harvest your valuable crop by grasping a small bundle of the wheatgrass blades firmly and cutting with a sharp knife or scissors about 1 cm above compost surface. Rinse well before use.
To juice, feed small bundles into your wheatgrass juicer while it is in motion, pushing it down with a plunger. Repeat until you have enough juice as required. We recommend drinking it neat, down in one straightaway.
One tray of well-grown wheatgrass yields up to 300ml of fresh wheatgrass juice. With an average 'dose' of 20-30 mls, one tray will give enough wheatgrass juice for about 7days. It will depend on the length and lushness of your homegrown wheatgrass and the efficiency of the juicer.
If you find the flavour too strong, try mixing it with water or fresh organic fruit or vegetable juices, such as pear, apple or carrot juice.
Drinking the juice is the ideal way to benefit from your wheatgrass, but the wheatgrass juice can also be used topically on the skin for certain conditions.
Once it is ready to use, keep it as cool as possible to maximise its life. If it is still growing too fast, or getting old, you can cut it and put it in your fridge for several days to keep fresh, but not for too long as it will need light to keep green. Rinse it immediately before use as usual.
By planting wheatgrass at weekly intervals, you can ensure a continuous supply.
